Space is expanding! Imagine drawing two dots on a deflated balloon. The dots are pretty close together. Then blow the balloon up. The dots get further and further apart as the balloon gets bigger.

Because the whole universe is expanding, and as it does, the galaxies tend to get further and further apart.
